Summary: Good Book
Rating: 4

I found this book very interesting and complete although it is VERY technical and i recommend it for only those who know a lot about the theme

Summary: A Classic
Rating: 5

This is a well written book that aircraft designers and those engaged in a serious study of wing aerodynamics will find useful, helpful and handy. This is not a book for the novice but for aeronautical engineering specialists who can handle fluid dynamics theory, performance and other mathematical manipulations. Although the book has been around for some time (I first used it at university as a recommended text in aerodynamics over 25 years ago), the theory and concepts are still very much relevant and applicable today.

For those seeking advanced knowledge on wing aerodynamics theory and have a flair for mathematics especially calculus, this is an excellent reference book that is well recommended.

Summary: Review of the book "Theory of Wing Sections"
Rating: 5

To Whom it May Conccern.
This is probably the best book written on the subject.

regards
Michael

Summary: Difficult, but complete
Rating: 4

I bought this book mostly as a reference. As such, I have not worked through much of it. Mathematically, the authors hold nothing back from the theory of fluid dynamics--as such, it's not an easy book to work through, but doable with patience. But, it certainly appears to all be there, if/when you may need it.

Summary: WING SECTIONS
Rating: 3

The book contains much theoretical material. I did not find it practical for the application that I needed and that is the application of wing sections to motor racing cars.

The co-ordinates of wing sections could be found in much more detail by just doing an internet search.

Interesting reading with many advanced mathematical formuli but it has very limited practical use.

Title: Enhancing Aircraft Conceptual Design Using Multidisciplinary Optimization

Author: Daniel P. Raymer

Year: 2002

Pages: 166

ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9172832592

Publisher: Department of Aeronautics

Description:

Research into the improvement of the Aircraft Conceptual Design process by the
application of Multidisciplinary Optimization (MDO) is presented. Aircraft conceptual
design analysis codes were incorporated into a variety of optimization methods including
Orthogonal Steepest Descent (full-factorial stepping search), Monte Carlo, a mutation-based
Evolutionary Algorithm, and three variants of the Genetic Algorithm with
numerous options. These were compared in the optimization of four notional aircraft
concepts, namely an advanced multirole export fighter, a commercial airliner, a flyingwing
UAV, and a general aviation twin of novel asymmetric configuration. To better
stress the methods, the commercial airliner design was deliberately modified for certain
case runs to reflect a very poor initial choice of design parameters including wing
loading, sweep, and aspect ratio.

MDO methods were evaluated in terms of their ability to find the optimal aircraft, as well
as total execution time, convergence history, tendencies to get caught in a local optimum,
sensitivity to the actual problem posed, and overall ease of programming and operation.
In all, more than a million parametric variations of these aircraft designs were defined
and analyzed in the course of this research.

Following this assessment of the optimization methods, they were used to study the issue
of how the computer optimization routine modifies the aircraft geometric inputs to the
analysis modules as the design is parametrically changed. Since this will ultimately drive
the final result obtained, this subject deserves serious attention. To investigate this
subject, procedures for automated redesign which are suitable for aircraft conceptual
design MDO were postulated, programmed, and evaluated as to their impact on
optimization results for the sample aircraft and on the realism of the computer-defined
“optimum” aircraft. (These are sometimes called vehicle scaling laws, but should not be
confused with aircraft sizing, also called scaling in some circles.)

Aircraft Performance & Design

Product Description:

Written by one of the most succesful aerospace authors, this new book develops aircraft performance techniques from first principles and applies then to real airplanes. It also address a philosophy of, and techniques for aircraft design. By developing and discussing these two subjects in a single text, the author captures a degree of synergism not found in other texts. The book is written in a conversational style, a trademark of all of John Anderson's texts, to enhance the readers' understanding.

Summary: A better historical than analytical textbook.
Rating: 3

Any student who has read through this textbook and tried to understand the derivations and derive the equations presented will realize that Anderson's forte is history more than engineering. The text is well written and interesting to read since Anderson gives a good historical background to each concept but Anderson's explanations are sometimes questionable and there are many conceptual and formula errors. The book does have good figures and presents a lot of good data but for students trying to learn aircraft performance for the first time, there are better textbooks out there. I am currently a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech studying for the qualifying exam. I was studying from this textbook but found that it was difficult to master the concepts to my professor's expectations based on what Anderson has presented. I recently aquired "Mechanics of Flight" by Warren Phillips which is much better at presenting the same material and is much more exhaustively researched from an analytical point of view. It is also much cheaper with twice the content so I would recommend it over Anderson's "Aircraft Performance and Design."

Summary: A great introduction to aircraft design
Rating: 5

This is an excellent book and can be used as a continuation of Introduction to Flight by the same author. This book focuses on airplane design and performance, but also gives a very clear introduction to propulsion and aerodynamics of airplanes. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in airplane design, as well as Daniel Raymer's book Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach. Both books I found to be extremely interesting and written in clear, easy to understand language.

This book was used in an upper level Aircraft Performance and Dynamics class that I recently took. I also found this book very helpful in my Aircraft Design class and my Aircraft Propulsion class. In short, a student of aeronautical engineering couldn't ask for a more well rounded book on aircraft design--covering all the aforementioned topics.

If only all engineering textbooks were so well written!

Summary: This book is now available.
