Summary: Great condition
Rating: 5

The book was in the condition it said it was. Was received in a timely manner as well.

Summary: Statics
Rating: 5

The book was in good condition. The order transition was easy and the book was shipped quickly.

Summary: Variations found in the same edition, but a required text,
Rating: 3

It's a typical statics books (no dynamics)!

It has color pictures with fair illustrations, but not great.

The most noteworthy thing about this book, which is required for a class I have, is that not all the problems are the same from book to book with same author and edition. It appears there are two versions of the same edition. The professor will start to work a problem, and sometimes half the class has it in their book, but the rest of the class has a different problem. The teacher acknowledges an issue exists. This is not due to differences in an international version.

Summary: Worst textbook ever!
Rating: 1

When i enrolled in statics class, i was hoping for a good text to go with it. Statics is challenging enough without having a good book to learn from (my class was online). The book gives brief examples of subjects that are covered in a few paragraphs!! Ridiculous! How i am supposed to build bridges that don't collapse when the only experience i've had with statics was finding the unit vector force F on a taught rope!! Gimme a break, even as an engineering student, i need a book that explains the key concepts better than just a synopsis at the end of the three paragraphs of material. Horrid book. Take it from somebody who had to drop the class because of it.

Summary: Great book
Rating: 5

I really enjoyed using the book for Statics.
The explanations are very clear, and not too wordy. There are lots of examples, and an abundance of problems. I enjoyed the fact that only 1 of 4 problems did not have the answers in the back, and 1 of 4 had partial solutions in the back.
Also, trivial as it may seem, I really enjoyed the use of color. Unlike many books that use it way too much, and others that don't use it enough, this used eye candy just enough to make the book pleasant to read.
Definately recommend.

Amazon offered this book for a college class for
my son. I was impressed with the book price
offered verses the book store price of $30.00
more. Amazon always makes shopping on their
site the best choice. No tax, Thanks Amazon

Summary: Useless
Rating: 1

I could not follow the examples or the chapter explanations. I felt as though the author did not want me to understand the basic concepts. I would spend hours on a few problems and understand about half the material. I would buy Lindeburg books on fundamentals of engineering. Do not buy this book even if it is assigned to the class. Most of your classmates or going to work together on homework problems and never open the book.

Summary: Very good.
Rating: 5

I don't know why this book gets negative comments.
I admit that the derivation of equation is quite challenging, but it is because the students at this level are usually not proficient with calculus yet. The virtue of this textbook is a lot of examples. There are ALWAYS 2~3 examples for EACH chapters, and each steps are shown clearly.

The only drawback is on the chapters on 3D motion chapter. The author uses same symbol for two different physical properties, so that the 3D kinematic eqn is totally messed up. But the example problem is solved in correct way, so you can fix the equation by carefully reading the example.

Summary: dynamics

I bought this for a college friend of mine and she is very please with the book.

Summary: Dynamics Book
Rating: 4

The questions are straight foreward and most of the examples are really helpful. One of the better books published by Hibbler.

Summary: Rating of the 1 st edition book and the author
Rating: 5

My discussion here is a rating of the 1st edition and the author, Professor R.C. Hibbeler. The first edition is the one I used in my course of study while in college.

Granted the book does not offer a lot of complicated examples, only relatively easy ones. But there is a reason. The author wants the student to develop his/her own skills in problem solving. He does explain the material in enough detail to accomplish this. The reasons for not supplying a solutions manual should be obvious.

This book does a great job of supplying a very large and diverse collection of problem. The illustrations are very helpful with the problem solving exercise. As best I can recall, answers are provided to all even numbered problems.

As a text book and learning tool, the author should (and does) assume that the reader is a aspiring engineering student with intension on learning the most from the subject.

As I said earlier, its strengths are the number of problems presented in the text and the fact that the answers to most all of the problems are in the back of the book.

The book covers all the basic subjects required for a future understanding of Mechanics of Materials, usually presented later on in your continuing engineering studies. I do recommend it as a text book for a basic entry level engineering statics course, and it is great for the beginning engineering student for first year engineering students. It is also a great tool for preparation and to improve your understanding of other classes such as calculus, physics, dynamics.

As for the author, he is top notch. You can be assured this professor knows his subject. Just look at the various other books written by him: Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Structural Analysis. But this does not always make a good teacher. However, this professor is a great teacher. For no other reason, simply because he was my instructor at the University Of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University Of Louisiana At Lafayette)
